Internship with United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) in the Division of Early Warning and Assessment (DEWA)

The purpose of this report is to explain what I did and learned during my internship period with the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) in the Division of Early Warning and Assessment (DEWA). The report is also a requirement for the partial fulfillment of United Nations Office in Nairobi (UNON) internship program. The report focuses primarily on the assignments handled, working environment, successes and short comings that the intern did encounter when handling various tasks assigned to him by the supervisor.

Because the various parts of the report reflect the intern’s shortcomings, successes, observations and comments, it would be imperative that the recommendations are also given. Therefore the report gives a number of comments and recommendations on the internship programme.

It is hoped that this report would serve as a cardinal vehicle to the improvement of the internship program.

The water unit is responsible for the assessment of water resources both freshwater and coastal/marine. Assessments of world’s freshwater and coastal/marine water resources are carried out in an integrated manner climate change and ecosystems management in collaboration with partners, UN collaborators, NGOs, universities, governments…, Such comprehensive Information about water quantity and quality, human water uses, water problems and their causes in turn provide the basis for making sound water management decisions. Exposure to ongoing activities will enhance the interns understanding of the global role of water assessment and its link to other disciplines of education.
